VectorCraft explained: who makes it, why it went viral, how it relates to ArtCraft and PhotoCraft, its formerly DrawCraft name, and how to try it.

VectorCraft is a free, open-source vector illustration app that recreates the Adobe Illustrator workflow. It is written from scratch ("clean-room") in pure Rust, runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, and also runs in a web browser through WebAssembly. You can try it right now on this site.

Who makes it?

VectorCraft is built by the ArtCraft team, whose main product is ArtCraft, an AI image and video studio. It is one of their Crafting Apps, a set of free open-source creative tools that each mirror a well-known Adobe product:

VectorCraft is an independent project and is not affiliated with Adobe.

Why did VectorCraft go viral?

In early October 2026 the ArtCraft team released the Crafting Apps together, and tech and photography sites widely covered the idea of free, open-source rebuilds of the Adobe suite — reportedly written with heavy use of AI coding tools. PhotoCraft drew the most attention, and VectorCraft followed, quickly passing thousands of GitHub stars.

VectorCraft used to be called DrawCraft

If you saw the name DrawCraft, it is the same project: it was renamed VectorCraft on 1 October 2026.

Not to be confused with…

Several unrelated products share the name:

  • "VectorCraft" Figma plugin — a paid plugin that converts bitmap images to SVG with AI credits. Different developer, different product.
  • VectorCraft Studio — a separate web app for animated SVG icons.
  • VectorCraft game studio — a Unity Asset Store publisher.

This site is about the open-source editor from the ArtCraft team.

How good is it?

VectorCraft is alpha software. Its authors estimate that about 88% of Illustrator 2026's menu items, tools, effects and formats exist and that it is about 65% "ready for real work" for a typical illustrator. Everyday drawing, Pathfinder, gradients, type, live effects and SVG/PDF files work; reliable Illustrator .ai exchange, 3D and generative AI are still missing.
