What Is SolidCraft? Free Open-Source Parametric 3D CAD

SolidCraft explained: a free parametric 3D CAD app in Rust with constrained sketches, a feature timeline, assemblies, sheet metal and STEP export — and who makes it.

SolidCraft is a free, open-source parametric 3D CAD application written in Rust. You sketch, constrain and build solids on a parametric feature timeline — change a dimension and the model rebuilds. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and in the browser, so you can use SolidCraft online without installing anything.

Who makes it?

SolidCraft is developed by bherbruck and community contributors at github.com/bherbruck/solidcraft, under the MIT or Apache-2.0 licence. It is not one of the ArtCraft team's Crafting Apps, although it follows the same idea: a professional desktop app rebuilt from scratch in Rust that also runs in a browser and can be driven by AI agents over MCP.

What it can do

  • Sketches on planes and faces: lines, rectangles, circles, arcs, polygons, slots, ellipses, splines, conics and text, with trimming, fillets and projection.
  • Constraints and dimensions solved by its own solver; fully constrained geometry turns black, and dimensions can be driven by parameters.
  • Features on a parametric timeline: extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, fillet and chamfer, shell, draft, holes, threads, patterns, mirror, split and combine.
  • Parameters and configurations with unit-aware expressions such as 2 * width + 5 mm.
  • Assemblies with joints, motion studies, interference and mass properties.
  • Sheet metal with flanges, hems, fold and unfold, flat patterns and DXF outlines.
  • Files: STEP and IGES import and export, 3MF, STL and OBJ, and URDF for robot simulators.

Where it stands

Its author calls SolidCraft early but usable for simple parts: 75 of 76 public reference parts match their analytic or FreeCAD-computed volume, area, centre of mass and bounding box, and the remaining one is a tracked bug. The desktop installers are not code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS show a warning the first time.

SolidCraft vs Fusion, SolidWorks and FreeCAD

Autodesk Fusion and SolidWorks are the professional standards, with subscriptions or paid licences. FreeCAD is mature, free and open source on the desktop. SolidCraft is younger, but it is open source, needs no account and runs right in your browser.

Try it

Open SolidCraft Online and start from the Sample Plate or Hinge Assembly, then export an STL for your 3D printer.

Questions people ask

Is SolidCraft made by the ArtCraft team?

No. SolidCraft is an independent community project by bherbruck and its contributors. It shares the Crafting Apps’ approach — Rust, open source, desktop and browser — but is a separate project.

Can I 3D print parts designed in SolidCraft?

Yes. It exports STL, 3MF and OBJ for slicers, and STEP or IGES for other CAD tools.

Does SolidCraft support assemblies?

Yes: nested components and occurrences, joints, motion studies, contact sets, interference checks and material-aware mass properties.
