GridCraft is a free, open-source spreadsheet app that recreates the Microsoft Excel workflow. The ArtCraft team — makers of VectorCraft, WordCraft and the other Crafting Apps — wrote it in Rust. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and in the browser: use GridCraft online.

What it can do

  • Familiar: the ribbon, formula bar, Name Box, sheet tabs, keyboard shortcuts, fill handle, point-mode formula entry with coloured references, Format Cells, Paste Special, conditional formatting and tables.
  • Formulas: 513 of Excel's 523 worksheet functions, dynamic arrays and spilling, LET and LAMBDA, structured table references and Excel's full number-format language.
  • Data: sort and AutoFilter, Flash Fill, data validation, outlining and subtotals, PivotTables.
  • Charts: seventeen chart types with a Chart Design tab and Format pane, plus sparklines.
  • Files: XLSX is native — styles, themes, formulas, tables, conditional formats, comments, charts, pictures, PivotTables and print settings round-trip. CSV and TSV too; old .xls workbooks open with values and formulas; XLSB and ODS worksheet data can be imported.
  • Print: Page Break Preview, print settings and PDF export.

Where it stands

GridCraft is in alpha: the core workflow works end to end, but depth, fidelity and file compatibility are still rough. It covers 89% of the Excel ribbon commands its authors track and is, by their estimate, about 50% ready for real work. Next on their list: XLSX fidelity on real-world files and very large workbooks.

GridCraft vs Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc

Excel remains the reference and needs Microsoft 365. Google Sheets is free and collaborative but cloud-based with its own interface. LibreOffice Calc is free and open source but desktop-only. GridCraft is open source, Excel-shaped, keeps workbooks on your device and runs in a browser.

Try it
